February: So many events!

Groundhog Day:
We made puppets and sang a song.

We created a book to take home.

We made predictions.

Chinese New Year:
We made lanterns.

Ms. Lisa told us about what occurs on Chinese New Year in China.

She taught us how to say Happy New Year in mandarin and cantonese. When we asked for lucky money we were given a red envelope or a red pocket.

She showed us the lion dance and we were given a prop to try it on our own.

100th Day of School:
We had a photo booth.

We made hats.

We had a 100th Day snack.

We had many fun games but our favourite was stacking 100 cups.

Valentine's Day:
We made a cute letter for our parents.

We made paper bags for our Valentine's cards.

We used our fine motor skills to create Valentine's Art.

Math:
We learned about weight: heavier, lighter and the same. We also learned how to use a balance.

We learned about capacity, which is how much a container can hold.

We reviewed length: shorter and taller. It is important to remember to align the materials on a line so that we can have a good measurement.

We learned about graphing.

We practiced number bonds and learned that we can use these numbers to show addition and subtraction.

We Are Writing!
I am very proud of what the students have accomplished this past month. They created their very first sentences!

This activity put into practice everything that we have been working on this year:
- sentence structure (capitalization, punctuation and finger spaces).
- sight words
- sounding out words that we do not know
- courage to try our best

We talked about dogs and came up with words that we already knew (sight words) and sounded out some basic words to create a word list. Then we reviewed what we have learned about sentences. Finally I showed them an example of what I expected.

I was so excited by the final result!

Animated Literacy:
We learned about Woody Woodchuck who looks for cookie trees to shake. (short oo as in shook).

We drew a book.

We learned about Ichabod Ichthyosaurus who is itchy from inchworms.

We drew a pig.

We learned about Chauncy Chipmunk who chops food to put in his chowder.

We drew a chick.

We learned about Old Joe Crow who likes to row his boat.

We drew a goat.

We learned about Leaping Eve who likes to leap over small trees.

We learned about Winkie Walrus who likes to wash his whiskers by the wishing well.

Don't Forget:
Send a healthy snack with your child. A list has been sent home or you can visit 100 Days of Real Food for some awesome ideas.

Each child needs to have indoor shoes, a backpack and appropriate clothing for the weather.

Feel free to contact me anytime with any questions or concerns. I can be reached at the school, by email or just drop in (I am usually around before school).
