November: Penguins and Colours

Penguins:
We started the unit by writing down what we already knew about penguins.

We looked for words that we knew and then read "I'm A Little Penguin".

We learned about the parts of a penguin and the life cycle of a penguin.

We went to Penguin Palooza at the zoo. There we learned about where penguins live, what they eat, their predators and about 4 penguin species.
Rockhopper Penguins hop and have yellow on the sides of their head.

The Humboldt Penguins have spotted chests and live where it is warm.

The Gentoo Penguins have white on the sides of their head and create nests out of rocks.
They pass rocks back and forth in their beaks.

The King Penguins have orange on their neck and chest.
They look a little bit like Emperor Penguins.

We learned about the parts of a penguin and camouflage
as a child put on penguin costume.

Then we went and watched the penguins in action. It was awesome!

We created penguin lapbooks to show what we had learned.

We ended the unit by writing down what we learned about penguins.

Colours:
We read "Roy G Biv" to learn the order of the rainbow.

We learned about the three primary colours: red, yellow and blue. Primary colours create other colours and cannot be created themselves.

We learned about secondary colours (the colours that the three primary colours create). We did this by completing one of my favourite activities: playdoh mixing and reading "Mouse Paint".

We learned how to read colour words.

Math
This month we learned about:

Ten Frames:
One student rolled the dice and filled in the ten frame then the partner would fill in the rest. They would use the language: "I have ____. I need _____ more to make 10."

We completed a worksheet to show what we were learning. I love how the child on the right created patterns as he coloured.

Matching Game with Power of 10 ten frame cards.

 Counting and Length:

The two counting strategies that we have been using are 1) touch and count 2) move and count.

This was a fun game that I found from Guiding Kinders. One partner would have all ten cubes behind their back and break it in two. Then the partner will choose a hand and take that piece. Both students place their pieces on the ten frame and then flick the paperclip to see who wins: the one with fewer or the one with more. The winner got a chip and they played until one player had five chips.
French:
We learned colour words: rouge (red), jaune (yellow), bleu (blue), vert (green), orange (orange), violet (purple), brun (brown), noir (black), blanc (white) and rose (pink).

Animated Literacy:
We drew a rat.

We learned about Hippy the Hippo who plays a harmonica at the hootenany.

We drew a rat in a hat.

Handwriting Without Tears
We learned about Magic C letters. These are letters that start out as a C but change into another letter: C, O, Q and G. We learned how to write uppercase letters S, A, I, J and T. We reviewed all of the uppercase letters and practiced writing the letters by writing words. We will begin learning lowercase letters in the new year.

For information on the order that I will be teaching letters please go to their website: http://www.hwtears.com/hwt/why-it-works/teaching-order

Don't Forget:
Send a healthy snack with your child. A list has been sent home or you can visit 100 Days of Real Food for some awesome ideas.

Each child needs to have indoor shoes, a backpack and appropriate clothing for the weather.

Feel free to contact me anytime with any questions or concerns. I can be reached at the school, by email or just drop in (I am usually around before school).
